The first thing I smelled when I walked inside my apartment was the sweet aroma of good smelling food cooking in the kitchen. One fact about Gianna was that she could cook her ass off. I wasnât too excited when I found out she would be moving up into my crib, but it was a plus coming home to a home-cooked meal every day.
âWhat you got on the stove?â I asked with my nose in the air. I walked over to Ariella who was lying down in her swing and scooped her up into my arms.
âShe was sleeping! What you do that for?â
Gianna jumped up and walked over to me as I sat down and held Ariella close to my chest. She peeked at me and then closed her eyes again and snuggled up against me. That made me feel like the happiest man in the worldâ¦Until I looked up at Gianna who was standing in front of me with her hands on her hips, glaring at me like I stole something.
âWhat? She still sleep!â
âUGH!â she huffed and stormed away into the kitchen.
âShe ainât gone be sleep too much longer you keep up that shit,â I shot out after her and kissed Ariella on the forehead when she began to stir. âWhat you cookinâ?â
Gianna walked back out of the kitchen with two plates in her hand and sat them on the table. I lifted up, craning my neck so I could try to make out what it was. It looked like chicken, beans and rice, biscuits and green beans. My stomach growled as my eyes settled on the food. I was starving.
âI wanted us to sit and eat at the table togetherâ¦like a family. Thatâs why I fed her and put her to sleep.â
Gianna smiled at me after sitting the plates on the table. She gave me a look that I knew all too well.
Here we go witâ dis bullshit, I thought as I groaned inwardly. Steeloâs words crept back up in my head and started fucking with me.
âGia, listenâ¦â I stood up and put Ariella in her swing and started it up. She stirred a little but went right back to sleep.
âYou and meâ¦weâre parents to Ari and thatâs it. We family but we ainât âa familyââ¦â I used air quotes. ââ¦if you know what I mean. Sheâs my daughter and sheâs your daughter but you and I ainât together. I care about you as the mother of my child but thatâs it, aâight?â
Giannaâs entire expression on her face fell and her shoulders slumped over. She made me feel so bad I thought about taking back what I said but I knew I couldnât. It wouldnât be right for me to lead her on when I knew I didnât want her like that. Had I been a lesser nigga, I would have just fucked with her anyways, knowing damn well that I didnât want more but I knew I couldnât do that. Not only was it the same shit
